Explore rowing on a kayak the beautiful Chagres River before it merges at the Gatun lake where the huge vessels and boats transit from Ocean to Ocean. The Chagres river is the main tributary of water of the Canal. A quite waterway, enjoying the sound of the wild life of this dense tropical forest. You might get the opportunity to see a sloth in a tree, a colorful bird peacefully living in the jungle or at the top the water plants, caimans, turtles among many others species of the local fauna. OK, it sounds obvious, but it’s actually one of the very best things to do in Tulum. Paradise Beach is one of the most spectacular beaches in the area. When the ocean is calm, it’s crystal clear and you can see right down to the bottom. When the sea is more active, it’s fun to jump and ride the waves. However, do pay attention to the beach flags, which signal water conditions: a black flag means do not swim; a red flag indicates dangerous conditions or swim with caution; a yellow flag means that although there is no immediate danger, you should still use caution while swimming; and a green flag means that it is completely safe to swim. There’s almost always a line at Panna e Cioccolato downtown on Avenida Tulum because of its sensational gelato flavors. Getting out of the hustle and bustle of Panama City is actually really easy and one of the best places to do it is at Soberania National Park. Located only 45 minutes from the city, Soberania National Park is a tropical paradise filled with wildlife. In fact, the park is known as one of the best places in Panama for bird watching! Visiting Soberania National Park is really easy from Panama City and there are two main options for places to visit and hiking trails. The first is called the Rainforest Discovery Center and here there are lots of marked trails as well as an observation tower to climb. The trails at the Discovery Center are shorter and more suited to families or those who don’t hike. The entrance here is $30 USD. The second is Pipeline Road. This is a much cheaper option and also more authentic. In total, Pipeline Road has 17 kilometers of hiking trails and is where you can spot monkeys, sloths, and a huge range of birds and reptiles. It only costs $5 USD to enter Pipeline road.
The mountain town of Boquete has a wonderful climate, where you can escape the sometimes oppressive heat of the coast and lower areas. The town is relaxed and safe, catering to expats and people escaping the winters in northern climates, and local Panamanians looking for a weekend getaway. Some of the appeal here is the variety of good restaurants, as well as a mix of quality hotels and luxury inns. It’s also one of Panama’s most important coffee-growing areas, and known as a hot spot for nature and wildlife, particularly hiking and birdwatching. Having a vehicle here is quite handy for touring the surrounding mountains and reaching trailheads and nearby sites, but you can also arrange tours with transportation to the coffee plantations. One of the best short drives in Panama leaves from the outskirts of Boquete. This scenic loop of about 15 miles passes the main hiking trails, a beautiful river, an abandoned castle, and waterfalls. The road also provides amazing views down the valley and up the slopes of Volcan Baru.
